Severe Storms Leave Over 350 Ukrainian Settlements Without Power
Power Outages Across Ukraine
According to Главком: On May 28, severe weather knocked out electricity to more than 350 towns and villages across 11 regions of Ukraine. According to the Ministry of Energy, residents in the following areas have been affected:
- Dnipropetrovsk
- Zaporizhzhia
- Kirovohrad
- Zakarpattia
- Mykolaiv
- Poltava
- Sumy
- Khmelnytskyi
- Cherkasy
- Chernihiv
- Kyiv
Crews are already on the ground working to restore power in the blacked-out areas.
Energy Ministry Recommendations
It is important to note that as of May 28, 2026, no scheduled blackouts are expected. The Ministry of Energy advises consumers to shift heavy electricity usage to daytime hours, between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM. During the evening peak from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM, residents are urged to use power sparingly to reduce strain on the grid.
Additionally, the government is launching a tender to build new power generation capacity totaling more than 1.3 GW. The Cabinet of Ministers also plans to establish a national reserve of autonomous generation equipment, including mobile power stations, cogeneration units, boilers, transformers, and other gear.
“Over 350 settlements in Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, Kirovohrad, Zakarpattia, Mykolaiv, Poltava, Sumy, Khmelnytskyi, Cherkasy, Chernihiv, and Kyiv regions remain without electricity due to the storm. Repair teams are working on restoration,” the Ministry of Energy reports.
Consumers are encouraged to check for updates on power supply changes through their local distribution system operators’ official channels.
This weather event highlights the urgent need for a more resilient energy infrastructure in Ukraine. While repair crews restore power, the government is also taking steps to boost overall energy security. Initiatives to build backup generation capacity could help reduce future risks, especially as extreme weather becomes more frequent.
As the impact of severe storms continues to disrupt power supply across Ukraine, it is essential for residents to stay informed about optimal electricity usage. For instance, following recent drone attacks, six Ukrainian regions also faced significant outages, prompting recommendations for consumers to adjust their energy consumption patterns.
