Over Half of Ukraine's Air Defense Crews Failed to Down a Single Drone in a Year: What Went Wrong

Over 50% of UAV crews failed
Більше половини батальйонів протиповітряної оборони України не зуміли перехопити жоден безпілотник за рік: що стало причиною цього?

Air Defense Crew Performance: A Deep Dive

According to Главком: Deputy Commander of the Ukrainian Air Force, Pavlo Yelizarov, revealed that more than 50% of crews tasked with intercepting drones did not shoot down a single enemy UAV over the past year. An analysis of over 300 crews exposed a stark performance gap. Only 66 units managed to destroy more than 10 Shahed drones annually, while 170 crews-representing over half of the total-recorded zero drone kills in the same period. This data highlights a critical challenge for Ukraine’s air defense as it faces relentless drone attacks.

Root Causes of Poor Performance

The lack of structured training and thorough performance analysis for pilots was cited as the primary reason for these disappointing results. Yelizarov’s remarks underscore deep-seated issues in the preparation and effectiveness of counter-drone operations.

“After analyzing the work of over 300 crews, we found a significant gap in their effectiveness. Only 66 units were able to destroy more than 10 Shahed drones per year.”

Effectively countering mass Shahed attacks remains a top priority for Ukraine’s air defense. Meanwhile, under Ministry of Defense contracts, the military received twice as many interceptors in 2026 as it did throughout all of 2025. The State Logistics Operator (DOT) is the main procurement agency. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has previously highlighted the effectiveness of domestic air defense, noting that modern systems eliminate over 90% of enemy drones.

This situation underscores the urgent need to improve crew training and refine counter-drone strategies to ensure a more effective response to modern threats. Given the influx of new interceptors, it is crucial that their deployment is paired with proper instruction and rigorous outcome analysis to boost the overall efficiency of Ukraine’s air defense.

The ongoing challenges in Ukraine's air defense are further highlighted by the recent decision to enhance interceptor deliveries, as reported in another article. This move comes as the Defense Ministry aims to double drone interceptor supplies amid a significant uptick in enemy UAV activity.
