Over Half of Ukrainian Refugees in Germany Are Now Employed, But Wages Lag Behind

Ukrainian refugees in Germany: salaries
Більше половини українських біженців у Німеччині вже знайшли роботу, однак заробітки залишаються на низькому рівні.

Employment Trends for Ukrainian Refugees in Germany

According to Главком: More than half of the Ukrainian refugees who arrived in Germany during the first six months of the full-scale 2022 invasion have now found work. The process of integration is ongoing, and by the summer of 2025, it is projected that over half of this group will be employed. This integration has occurred at a notably faster pace than for other refugee groups; for instance, refugees who arrived from other countries in 2015 took roughly six years to reach a similar level of employment.

As of now, approximately half of these Ukrainians are working, three and a half years after their arrival. However, their employment rate remains below the German national average of 68% for the working-age population. The wages for Ukrainians in full-time positions average 72% of the country's median income, with a significant portion employed in lower-wage sectors of the economy.

Yuliia Kosiakova: 'After three and a half years, around half of the Ukrainians are already working, and their full-time wages average 72% of the national median level.'

These figures indicate that Ukrainian refugees are successfully integrating into the German labor market, though their employment levels and earnings still require improvement.

The Need for Continued Support

This data underscores the critical importance of sustained support for Ukrainian refugees in Germany and the need for further efforts to enhance their job prospects and wages. Continuing integration programs and providing access to vocational training could help raise employment rates and improve the economic well-being of these individuals. Given the ongoing situation in Ukraine, the successful long-term integration of this population is likely to have a significant impact on Germany's future demographic and economic development.
