Diplomatic Corps Tours Darnytsia Thermal Power Plant

According to МЗС: On February 4, 2024, more than 60 heads of diplomatic missions and international organizations visited Kyiv's Darnytsia Thermal Power Plant (TPP). The visit, organized by Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, came in direct response to a Russian military strike on the facility the previous day, February 3. During a government briefing, officials presented the damage from the attack and outlined the requirements for restoring the plant's operations. This demonstration is part of Ukraine's ongoing effort to document war crimes and secure international support for reconstruction.

The briefing for the diplomats was led by senior Ukrainian officials, including:

  • Oleksiy Kuleba, Deputy Prime Minister for the Restoration of Ukraine and Minister for Communities and Territories Development,
  • Yevhen Perebyinis, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs,
  • representatives from the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine,
  • and management from the Darnytsia TPP and its operating company.

The Critical Role of the Darnytsia TPP

The Darnytsia TPP is a vital piece of infrastructure, providing heating for over 300,000 Kyiv residents, including numerous kindergartens, schools, and hospitals. Discussions during the visit focused not only on the immediate impact of the attack but also on the urgent steps needed to restore the plant's functionality before the next winter. Attacks on energy infrastructure have been a consistent feature of Russia's military strategy, aiming to cripple civilian life during harsh winter months.

The tour underscores the international community's engagement with Ukraine's plight and highlights the critical need to rebuild essential services devastated by the war. By witnessing the consequences firsthand, diplomats can better assess the scale of destruction and the resources required for recovery, potentially galvanizing further practical and financial aid for Ukraine's reconstruction efforts.
