Popular Austrian resort has set new rules for tourists
Austria is preparing for the peak winter season and is introducing new transport restrictions in the tourist Tyrol. From December 20, it is prohibited to bypass traffic jams via local roads, changing the usual routes for vacationers. This is reported by Der Spiegel. The decision was made due to constant complaints from residents about the overload of small streets by tourist vehicles on weekends and holidays.
New rules in Tyrol
The prohibition applies in the busiest areas – Kufstein, Reutte, Imst, and Schwaz. If there is a traffic jam on the highway, it is prohibited to exit to local roads for a bypass. Road services and police will strengthen control, having the right to stop cars, redirect traffic, and fine violators.
At the same time, navigation services Google Maps and Waze are required to update routes to no longer direct tourists to narrow and dangerous winter roads.
Duration of restrictions and additional changes
Restrictions will be in effect until April 6, 2026, on weekends and holidays from 07:00 to 19:00.
Due to the repair of the Lug Bridge, the rules also apply to the Innsbruck area and the Wipptal Valley – from December 27 to March 1, 2026.
Traffic lights are also being installed in the region to regulate traffic on narrow sections to avoid transportation collapse.
Tourists are reminded: winter recreation in the mountains is associated with the risk of injury, and medical services in Austria are expensive.
