US Representatives' Visit to Kyiv

According to Главком: Despite multiple journeys to Moscow, US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner never made it to Kyiv. Several factors contributed to this absence:

  • stalled negotiation progress,
  • Russia's demand for full control over Donbas,
  • a shift in US priorities toward a potential conflict with Iran,
  • logistical hurdles stemming from the need to travel by train due to Ukraine's closed airspace.

The visit was never officially confirmed.

Talks with Russia

Witkoff and Kushner traveled to Moscow on several occasions to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin, yet they never set foot in Kyiv-even though such a trip was planned before their Moscow visits. 'They repeatedly promised to come to Kyiv but never followed through,' a Ukrainian official noted.

The planned Kyiv visit fell through because there was no real headway in the discussions.

Russia is insisting on complete authority over Donbas, a stance that Ukraine has firmly rejected. 'The Russians want all of Donbas; our position is to find a dignified solution,' one Ukrainian official emphasized.

At the same time, the talks currently lack any meaningful substance, which further complicates the situation. 'There is no essence to it yet,' another official remarked.

An added obstacle for Witkoff and Kushner is the logistical challenge of train travel. 'They have their own issue with having to go by train. It's difficult for Witkoff,' a source disclosed.

Ukraine's closed airspace makes visits harder to arrange, thereby affecting US diplomatic efforts in the region.

The absence of a US envoy visit to Kyiv highlights the growing strain in diplomatic relations between Ukraine and Russia, as well as a reorientation of American foreign policy priorities. This could have serious consequences for future negotiations over the Donbas conflict, given the United States' crucial role in rallying international support for Ukraine. The logistical difficulties tied to the closed airspace underscore the additional challenges diplomats face amid heightened geopolitical tensions.

The ongoing diplomatic efforts in the region have raised questions about the effectiveness of US engagement. While Witkoff and Kushner have focused on Moscow, their planned trip to Kyiv for peace discussions remains unfulfilled.
