SAFE Program: Costa Calls for Creating a Joint EU Defense System
The European Union Plans to Strengthen Defense by 2030
According to hvylya.net: President of the European Council Antonio Costa called on the European Union to take more responsibility for the safety of its citizens. He noted that without strong defense, peace will only be an illusion. This became evident after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which underscored the importance of defense for ensuring safety.
'NATO is extremely important. However, the European Union also has its value; it plays a key role and is ready to take on more responsibility,' Costa emphasized.
In this regard, the European Council adopted a working plan for the future. This plan includes increasing defense spending for member states as well as standardizing and jointly purchasing equipment.
Strengthening European Defense
The President of the Euro Council emphasized that a joint EU defense system is necessary, but this does not mean creating a European army. According to him, joint resources can be used by national armies as part of collective plans.
'Strengthening Europe’s defense is not just a slogan; it is our duty. We must protect our citizens, uphold our values, and ensure our future,' Costa concluded.
In conclusion, EU leaders acknowledged the need to strengthen defense to ensure peace and security in the region while emphasizing a collective approach to this issue without necessarily creating a unified European army.
