Putin rejected changing the course of the war: new Western sanctions will not break Russia
Vladimir Putin rejected the possibility of changing his policy in the war against Ukraine, even in the face of new sanctions threats from the West. This decision was made against the backdrop of signals from the United States and the European Union about preparing additional restrictions against Russia.
Russia's attempts to bypass sanctions
Despite the imposition of over ten thousand sanctions due to the annexation of Crimea and the invasion of Ukraine, the Russian authorities claim that the economy is withstanding the pressure. Putin cites military expenditures as an example that have helped to outpace the growth rates of G7 countries' economies. The Russian government is looking for ways to circumvent the restrictions.
'No sanctions can influence the consistency of the policies of the Russian Federation,' emphasized Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
Increasing economic pressure on Russia
U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed readiness to move to the 'second phase' of sanctions against Russia and countries importing its oil. In Brussels, it was noted that the European Union is coordinating its actions with the U.S.
Shelling in Russia led to fires and claimed the lives of at least four people. Moscow claims that the targets were military facilities.
European capitals and Ukraine emphasize that the Kremlin shows no desire for peace. Russia continues to refer to the war as a 'special military operation' and views it as a necessary step to achieve political and strategic goals.
Putin has rejected any change in his policy in the war against Ukraine, even in the face of new sanctions threats from the West. The Russian authorities will try to find ways to bypass the restrictions, but the European Union and the U.S. have agreed to intensify economic pressure on Russia through new sanctions. Clearly, the conflict in eastern Ukraine remains uncertain from Russia's side, which shows no inclination towards a diplomatic resolution of the situation.
