Attack on Kyiv region

According to Главком: In the early hours of May 24, Russia launched a strike on the Kyiv region using an Oreshnik medium-range ballistic missile. The weapon hit a garage cooperative in the city of Bila Tserkva, missing its presumed target in Kyiv by almost 100 kilometers. The only person harmed in the attack was a security guard, Tetiana Ivanivna, who fortunately survived and suffered no serious physical injuries. She returned to her duties shortly after the incident.

Aftermath of the incident

Journalists at the auto cooperative site documented three craters left by the impact of warheads. The deepest crater measured up to 1.2 meters, with a diameter of about three meters. The munition reportedly pierced a concrete basement slab. The Oreshnik missile was manufactured nearly a decade ago and contains only Russian and Belarusian components. It represents a deep modernization of Soviet and post-Soviet technologies.

Experts point out that the missile lacks both high-explosive and fragmentation effects. As Oleh Katkov noted,

“There is no high-explosive effect, nor fragmentation effect. That is why the impact of a single Oreshnik block is significantly less dangerous than the explosion of a Shahed drone with an enhanced warhead.”

This suggests that while the attack caused material damage, the threat to human life was lower compared to other types of munitions.

Overall, the incident in Bila Tserkva highlights the continuation of military operations in the region and the use of missiles based on older technologies that still pose a risk to civilians.

This case demonstrates how military actions continue to affect civilian populations, even when the technical characteristics of the munitions used may reduce the immediate threat to life. The alarming situation in Ukraine remains complex, as attacks on civilian infrastructure can have far-reaching consequences, not only physically but also psychologically for local residents.

The recent strike in Bila Tserkva underscores the ongoing military tensions in Ukraine, particularly concerning the use of older missile technologies. Notably, the Oreshnik missile has been confirmed to contain no foreign components, which raises questions about the implications of relying on domestically produced armaments in conflict scenarios. This development is crucial for understanding the broader context of military strategies employed in the region.
