Missile Strike on Kyiv’s Nyvky District: At Least 10 Dead, Dozens Wounded
Deadly Attack in Kyiv: July 2, 2024 Missile Strike
According to Главком: In the early hours of July 2, 2024, around 3:15 AM, a Russian missile-preliminarily identified as a Kalibr-slammed into the courtyard of a five-story residential building near the Nyvky metro station in Kyiv. According to Mayor Vitali Klitschko, the assault killed 10 people and injured over 30. Minister Ihor Klymenko later confirmed 11 fatalities and more than 30 wounded. This incident is part of a broader pattern of attacks on civilian areas that have drawn widespread condemnation.
Eyewitness Accounts and Destruction
Journalist Olha Musafirova described the immediate aftermath on Facebook. She reported that residents, cut by shattered glass in their own apartments, gathered in the underground passage leading to the metro.
“Living nearby, they decided to wait out the attack at home. The steps in the passage were chipped, and tiles crumbled from the walls in chunks,”
she wrote. The explosion shook the underground metro station, sending plaster falling from the ceiling. After the strike near the exit to Beresteiskyi Avenue, people called for medics, and ambulance crews arrived shortly.
The scale of damage in Nyvky is staggering. The five-story residential building lost its roof, and gaping holes replaced windows. The missile detonated about 20 meters from the structure, leaving a large crater. At Gymnasium No. 73, all windows were blown out. Torn trolleybus wires litter the roadway, and the street is covered with scorched branches and tree trunks. The blast wave shattered numerous windows in buildings across Beresteiskyi Avenue.
Volunteers and psychologists are on site, while law enforcement inspects the area for potential explosive hazards. Traffic in the district is either blocked or rerouted. Notably, on the night of July 2, the Russian army also attacked Kyiv with drones, ballistic and cruise missiles, and hypersonic Zircon missiles, affecting 28 locations across the capital.
This tragic event underscores the grave situation in the region and the direct impact of hostilities on civilian lives. Strikes on civilian infrastructure, such as this missile attack on a residential building, fuel deep concern among the public and the international community regarding the protection of human rights and the safety of non-combatants in conflict zones.
The recent missile strike in Kyiv underscores the ongoing dangers civilians face in the conflict. In a related incident, a live warhead was discovered near a high-rise, raising concerns about further threats in residential areas. Such discoveries highlight the precarious situation that residents continue to endure amidst escalating violence.
