Attack Details

During the night of July 6, a total of 419 aerial assault weapons were detected, including 68 missiles and 351 attack drones. The missile arsenal consisted of:

  • 6 Tsirkon and Oniks anti-ship missiles
  • 23 Iskander-M ballistic missiles
  • S-400 missiles
  • 33 Kh-101 cruise missiles
  • 6 Kalibr missiles

Additionally, Shahed, Gerbera, Italmas drones, and Parodya decoys were used. Ukraine’s Air Force managed to intercept or suppress 363 targets, including 37 missiles and 326 drones. However, 29 ballistic missiles and 18 drones hit their marks across 34 locations.

Beyond Kyiv, the surrounding Kyiv region saw 3 fatalities and 16 injuries, with other areas such as Kharkiv, Sumy, Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, Dnipropetrovsk, and Odesa also affected. Over 400 rescue workers and police officers were deployed to manage the aftermath. According to reports, rescuers saved 64 people, including 2 children.

President Volodymyr Zelensky noted that 'our defenders performed well against drones and cruise missiles last night, but not against ballistic missiles,' expressing concern over a 'shortage of interceptor missiles.'

Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko described the event as 'a deliberate and targeted Russian terror against Ukrainians,' stressing that 'no such enemy crime will go unpunished.' Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Kuleba characterized the attacks as 'sheer terrorism against Ukraine’s civilian population.'

This nighttime assault marks another tragic phase in Russia’s ongoing aggression, inflicting significant human and material losses. The attack underscores the escalation of hostilities between Russia and Ukraine, particularly regarding aerial strikes on civilian infrastructure. Ukrainian officials’ concerns about insufficient air defense capabilities highlight the urgent need for enhanced military support from international partners. Such events also raise global apprehension about regional security and the conflict’s trajectory, potentially influencing Ukraine’s political landscape and the response of international organizations to the aggressor’s actions.

The recent attack on Kyiv is not the first instance of such devastating strikes, as previous incidents have also resulted in significant casualties. For instance, just weeks earlier, massive shelling of Kyiv and Kharkiv left 9 people dead, highlighting the ongoing threat posed by Russian military actions in the region. Understanding these patterns is crucial for grasping the full impact of the current conflict.
