Ukraine Endures Major Drone Barrage: Over 700 Launched in April 1 Attacks
Key Developments in Ukraine on April 1
According to Главком: Several significant events unfolded in Ukraine on April 1, including:
- A massive drone assault launched by the Russian Federation;
- Changes to Ukrposhta postal service tariffs;
- A meeting between President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi;
- The launch of a government program to support businesses damaged by shelling;
- A conversation between Zelenskyy and U.S. representatives.
Drone Assaults and the Presidential Response
Russia continued its aggressive campaign with a large-scale drone attack on Ukraine. Reports indicate that on April 1 alone, Russia launched more than 700 drones. Strikes were recorded in the Volyn, Zakarpattia, Ternopil, Chernivtsi, Cherkasy, and Ivano-Frankivsk regions, as well as in Poltava Oblast. The attacks damaged energy infrastructure, food warehouses in Lutsk, a Nova Poshta terminal, and residential buildings.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted:
“Unfortunately, there were hits, particularly in Volyn Oblast, Zakarpattia Oblast, Ternopil region, Chernivtsi Oblast, Cherkaasy Oblast, Ivano-Frankivsk region, and also in other regions. Restoration work is ongoing everywhere it is needed. Energy facilities are again among the primary targets for the Russians.”
Volodymyr Zelenskyy also emphasized that these attacks are Russia's response to Ukraine's proposal for an Easter ceasefire:
“This is essentially the Russians' answer to our proposal for a ceasefire over the Easter holidays. Ukraine openly made such a proposal to Russia. Russia is responding with Shahed drones and continuing its terrorist operations against our energy sector, against our infrastructure.”
Separately, Ukrposhta announced changes to parcel shipping tariffs, set to take effect on April 1, 2026. The company explained that it had long held tariffs steady, but costs had risen substantially during that time-for fuel, generators, and the restoration of branches and vehicles damaged by shelling. Fuel costs alone now reach 40 million hryvnias per month, forcing a partial tariff adjustment.
The Ukrainian government approved the 'Point of Support' program, aimed at assisting businesses that halted operations due to Russian shelling. This decision is intended to help enterprises resume work under wartime conditions.
During a meeting with Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi, President Zelenskyy focused on the frontline situation, stating: “It is important that Russia failed to achieve its objectives in the border areas of Sumy and Kharkiv oblasts and in Donetsk region, and is once again postponing its deadlines. In the Southern direction, our units continue to implement their assigned tasks.”
Furthermore, Zelenskyy held talks with U.S. Special Representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. “Today we spoke in detail with Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner, and were joined by Lindsey Graham and Mark Rutte. We discussed how to strengthen diplomacy, what steps are possible, as well as security guarantees and the involvement of Europeans,” the president noted.
In other news, the European Commission proposed that the EU Council allocate a 45 billion euro loan to Ukraine, and Ukraine and Bulgaria agreed to develop the Vertical Gas Corridor. It was also noted that a soldier with the call sign 'Madjar' received the highest award from the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.
The situation in Ukraine remains tense due to ongoing Russian attacks, which underscore Moscow's strategy of opposing any peace initiatives. These drone assaults are part of a sustained campaign targeting civilian infrastructure. Meanwhile, government initiatives like the 'Point of Support' program demonstrate Ukraine's efforts to sustain its economy and businesses during the war. International support, including the proposed financial aid from the European Commission, could prove crucial for the country's stabilization and recovery.
As the situation escalates, President Zelenskyy has detailed a week marked by relentless strikes from Russia, emphasizing the urgent need for enhanced air defense systems. These ongoing attacks not only threaten civilian infrastructure but also highlight the strategic challenges Ukraine faces in protecting its sovereignty.
