According to glavcom.ua: The Russian government has decided to take an extreme step and withdraw from the European Convention for the Prevention of Torture, which was adopted back in 1987. This means that Russia will no longer be subject to the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture, which has the right to visit places of detention and obtain information about these facilities.

What does this mean for Russia?

Withdrawal from the convention will free Russia from its mandatory obligations to the Committee. Previously, the international body had the opportunity to visit institutions in the country, receive detailed information about the conditions of detention, and move within them.

Russia was already expelled from the Council of Europe in March 2022 due to its invasion of Ukraine, which led to a deterioration of relations with European partners.

It seems that simultaneously with this measure, Russia is negotiating with the USA on reducing nuclear stockpiles. President Trump outlined plans for the USA in conjunction with the Russian Federation and China regarding the reduction of nuclear weapons.

However, it is important to note that in the context of escalating international relations and geopolitical conflicts, the issue of nuclear security and the arms race remains relevant and requires the attention of all participants in world politics.
