First Video Evidence: Russia Now Using Shahed Drones as Carriers for FPV Units
Shahed Drones Deployed as Carriers for FPV Drones
According to ХВИЛЯ: Russia has begun using its Shahed attack drones to transport First-Person View (FPV) drones to the battlefield. This tactical shift, confirmed by Ukrainian Ministry of Defense advisor Serhiy Beskrestnov, is supported by the first video evidence showing a single Shahed drone capable of carrying two FPV drones simultaneously. This innovation could significantly impact combat operations by making drone attacks more efficient and extending their operational range. The use of such 'drone carriers' represents an escalation in the unmanned aerial warfare that has defined much of the conflict.
"I recently noted that the factory-mounted carriers for FPV drones on Molniya and Gerbera models were a bad sign. Today, I have the first video confirmation of FPV drones being carried by a Shahed. I already know that one Shahed can carry two FPVs. I am asking all anti-aircraft drone crews to be alert to the possible presence of FPV drones on Shaheds,"
- Serhiy Beskrestnov
Earlier discoveries of factory-installed mounts for carrying FPV drones on Russian Molniya and Gerbera drones had already signaled preparations for new tactical approaches. Beskrestnov also reported the appearance of new communication systems among Russian forces on the front, including terminal satellite internet for the Russian army. He urged all Ukrainian anti-aircraft drone crews to watch for FPV drones on Shaheds, as their presence increases the threat level.
Impact of New Tactics on Combat Operations
The introduction of these drone-carrier tactics could substantially alter the dynamics on the battlefield by enhancing the enemy's ability to strike Ukrainian positions. This necessitates that Ukrainian forces adapt their defensive strategies to counter the emerging threats posed by these combined systems. The technological upgrades within Russian units, including new communication and control assets, may influence the overall frontline situation. These developments present fresh challenges for Ukrainian military planners, requiring careful monitoring and a proactive response to maintain defensive effectiveness.
