International Aviation and Space Exhibition Called Off

According to Главком: Russia's government has decided to remove the International Aviation and Space Salon from its list of official international exhibitions scheduled for 2026. The biennial event, which had been held every two years since 1993, has now been formally postponed to 2027. Alongside this, the Hydroaviasalon exhibition has also been delayed until the same year. The cancellation stems from the Russian air defense system's failure to safeguard facilities against Ukrainian drone strikes.

In July 2025, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin signed a decree authorizing the airshow to take place in both 2026 and 2027, but circumstances have since shifted. The last fully in-person event was held in 2021, while the exhibition was conducted online throughout 2024 and 2025. This marks a significant shift in how large-scale events are organized and executed in Russia.

Broader Implications of Event Cancellations

Additionally, the Kremlin acknowledged that the cancellation of mass gatherings is driven by the current operational environment, as stated by Russia's Ministry of Defense. Admitting to a terrorist threat from Ukraine underscores the rising tensions in the region. Notably, a concert on Red Square for Russia Day (June 12) was recently scrapped for the first time in 23 years, with celebrations moved to the outskirts of Moscow and a drastically reduced lineup of performers.

On May 9, the Victory Day Parade on Red Square took place without military hardware for the first time since 2007. The parade lasted 45 minutes and was accompanied by a complete internet blackout and patrols in the city center. These changes in festive event planning reflect the new reality Russia faces amid escalating security threats.

The cancellation of the International Aviation and Space Salon and other public events signals a transformation in how Russia approaches event organization against a backdrop of growing security challenges. It also points to the economic and social repercussions the country is experiencing due to military actions and international isolation. As traditional celebrations and exhibitions are either canceled or reshaped, Russia must reconsider its strategies in cultural and social life.

The recent decision to cancel major events, including the International Aviation and Space Salon, highlights a growing trend influenced by security concerns. This situation mirrors the recent cancellation of a concert on Red Square due to similar threats from Ukrainian drone strikes.
