Ukraine Endures Record Drone Barrage: Odesa and Energy Grid Hit Hardest
Ukraine Targeted in Major Drone Assault
According to Главком: Ukraine faced a massive overnight drone assault from Russia, which launched a total of 165 attack drones. The primary targets of this coordinated strike were the nation's energy facilities and other critical infrastructure. The port city of Odesa suffered the most severe damage, with over 50 drone impacts recorded. The attacks there damaged five residential buildings, destroyed dozens of apartments, and blew out windows and building facades.
The assault resulted in dozens of injuries, including children. One drone struck a house of worship belonging to an evangelical Christian community. Additional damage in Odesa was reported at a church, a kindergarten, a school, a fitness center, and private vehicles. Major fires broke out at several locations, complicating emergency response efforts.
Strikes Across Multiple Regions
The drone attacks were not confined to Odesa, impacting several other Ukrainian regions, including:
- Lviv Oblast
- Dnipropetrovsk Oblast
- Mykolaiv Oblast
- Sumy Oblast
- Kharkiv Oblast
In Lviv Oblast on January 27, Russian forces attacked an infrastructure facility, causing a temporary spike in carbon monoxide levels in the village of Smilne.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the situation, stating: 'By attacking Odesa, the Russians are damaging civilian sites and the energy sector. Such strikes undermine diplomatic efforts that are trying to stop the war.'
This large-scale attack is part of Russia's ongoing military aggression against Ukraine, which continues to inflict severe harm on civilians and infrastructure. These assaults on energy systems are a common tactic in Russia's winter campaign to weaken Ukrainian morale. The emergency response measures and the president's statement underscore the critical need for continued international support for Ukraine in the face of persistent threats, highlighting the urgent necessity for enhanced security and protection for civilians as the conflict escalates.
