Kyiv Hit by Russian Ballistic Missile; Fedorov Warns of Critical Patriot Ammo Shortage

Overnight Strike on Kyiv and the Growing Missile Deficit

According to Главком: In the early hours of July 6, 2026, Russia launched its second ballistic missile attack on Kyiv this month. Ukraine’s Defense Minister, Mykhailo Fedorov, highlighted an alarming scarcity of interceptor missiles for the Patriot air defense systems. He stated that

“Russia is deliberately intensifying its use of ballistic missiles, launching them on a scale never seen before, and exploiting the severe shortage of Patriot interceptors.”

According to Fedorov, the global monthly production of these interceptor missiles is now lower than the number Russia fires at Ukraine in the same period.

Defense expert Valeriy Romanenko reports that Russia can produce roughly 60 ballistic missiles per month-a figure that has held steady since September of the previous year. As of mid-April, Russia’s stockpile of ballistic missiles stood at around 200 units. In June, Russia launched 95 ballistic missiles; in May, 86; in April, 49; and in February, 115. The Iskander-M missiles used have a range of 500 km and were fired from Russia’s Bryansk and Kursk regions.

Romanenko also noted that the initial estimate of Russia’s Zircon missile inventory was 230, but that number has since been revised down to 120. He remarked that

“today’s attack is timed to coincide with the NATO summit.”

However, he added that “we are handling cruise missiles well-shooting down 95% of them.”

Patriot Missile Shortage Reaches Critical Levels

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently underscored the severity of the Patriot interceptor shortage during a speech at the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly. Ukraine requires over 700 Patriot interceptor missiles per year, yet global production for the entire year of 2025 was only between 620 and 640 units for this system.

The expert also outlined potential countermeasures to Russian strikes. One option involves imposing a local lockdown on the Russian border regions, which might help reduce the number of attacks on Ukrainian territory. The situation remains tense, and the next moves by both Russia and Ukraine will draw close international attention.

The ongoing missile strikes and their consequences for Ukraine continue to cause concern, as the shortage of Patriot interceptors hampers the defense of Ukrainian cities. Analysts point to the urgent need for more missile launchers, which will require international support and coordinated efforts to bolster Ukraine’s defensive capabilities. Recent events signal rising tensions in the region, underscoring the need for continued global focus on the conflict.

As the situation escalates, Ukraine's urgent appeal for international support becomes even more critical. With nearly 40 nations approached for additional supplies of Patriot missiles, the need for enhanced air defense capabilities is paramount. This effort reflects the ongoing challenges faced by Ukraine amidst a significant missile shortage, highlighting the necessity for collective action in response to the increasing threat.
