Russian Forces Seize Village of Sopych, Deport 19 Civilians to Russia
Seizure of Sopych Village
According to Главком: Russian military forces have taken control of the village of Sopych in the Sumy region. This development was reported by the monitoring group DeepState, which tracks the situation in Ukraine. As of March 6, the DeepStateMap marks Sopych as occupied. The day before, on March 5, the village was labeled an 'area of penetration.' The Sumy region, bordering Russia, has faced repeated incursions and shelling since the full-scale invasion began.
Abduction of Civilian Residents
According to available information, Russian troops forcibly transported approximately 19 civilians from Sopych, which is part of the Esman community in Sumy Oblast, into Russian territory. The abducted individuals are currently being held in a settlement within Russia's Bryansk region. Interviews with some of the kidnapped residents were later broadcast on the Russian state television channel 'Vesti.' This forced transfer of civilians constitutes a potential war crime under international law.
Furthermore, Russian military units remain stationed in the settlement of Hrabovske in the Sumy region. The occupiers entered this village last December and attempted to advance further. As DeepState notes, 'the enemy advanced near Popivka, Vysoke, in Komarivka, and occupied Sopych.' This pattern of activity indicates an escalation of hostilities in the area and poses an ongoing threat to local communities.
The occupation of Sopych and the abduction of its civilians underscore the continuation of Russian aggression in Ukraine, raising serious concerns within the international community. The situation in Sumy highlights not only military activity but also the severe humanitarian consequences of the conflict for the local population. These events could have significant implications for the future trajectory of the war in the region and for Ukraine as a whole.
