Russian Forces Create Conditions for Anthrax Outbreak in Kherson Region

According to Главком: In the temporarily occupied areas of Ukraine's Kherson region, Russian invaders are deliberately fostering conditions that could lead to the spread of anthrax. According to Ukraine's Defense Ministry Main Intelligence Directorate, the issue involves the uncontrolled burial of infected livestock carcasses in designated animal burial sites. There are up to fifty such sites across the region, with roughly ten posing the greatest danger. These are located near the settlements of Askania-Nova, Skadovsk, and Zaliznyi Port.

The intelligence report states that infected animals are being disposed of without following proper sanitary protocols. Instead of being incinerated, the carcasses are simply buried. Some of these burial grounds are less than one kilometer from residential buildings, and they lack adequate fencing or other protective barriers. The soil over the graves is settling, and the sites receive no maintenance. Several are situated in areas with high groundwater levels, which increases the risk of the pathogen spreading.

Public Health Threat

Scientists warn that the anthrax bacterium can remain viable in soil for decades-sometimes up to a century-posing a serious health risk to both the local population and the agricultural sector of Kherson. The Main Intelligence Directorate emphasizes that the uncontrolled burial of infected livestock and the disregard for safety measures by Russian occupiers represent a direct threat to civilians living in these temporarily seized territories.

It is also possible that Russia may exploit these animal burial sites as part of a false-flag operation. Such an operation could involve both kinetic strikes on areas with high concentrations of anthrax sources and an accompanying information-propaganda campaign.

As a result, the situation in the occupied part of Kherson Oblast raises serious concerns about public health safety and environmental stability in the region. The uncontrolled burial of infected animals could trigger outbreaks of dangerous diseases, threatening not only residents of Kherson but also neighboring areas. Amid the ongoing conflict, it is critical to maintain proper oversight of the epidemiological situation to prevent further harm to people's health and the environment.
