Moldova Frontier Checkpoint Hit in Russian Drone Assault
Odesa Under Fire
According to УНІАН — Туризм: During the night of August 21, Russian forces launched Shahed drones against the Bolhrad and Izmail districts of Odesa Oblast. One of the strikes landed on the international border checkpoint "Tabaky" along the Moldova frontier, damaging its buildings and structures. Ukraine's State Emergency Service managed to contain the resulting fires. Because of the incident, the checkpoint is now closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic, with travelers being rerouted to other crossing points. The neighboring side has also been notified.
According to Oleh Kiper, head of the Odesa Regional Military Administration, the region's port infrastructure was also hit recently. That attack damaged a civilian vessel flying the flag of the Republic of Togo and wounded four people, three of whom were hospitalized, including one in serious condition. Kiper added that all those affected are receiving necessary medical care.
Infrastructure Under Attack: Consequences
A separate large-scale assault targeted a border checkpoint with Moldova on August 20. These incidents demonstrate Russia's continued aggressive operations in the area, raising alarm among local residents and state institutions alike. The repeated strikes on Odesa's border and port infrastructure are part of a broader pattern of Russian attacks on Ukrainian regions near international borders.
Such attacks heighten security concerns in Odesa Oblast and strain Ukraine's connections with its neighbors. Damage to crossing points disrupts cross-border traffic and risks harming the region's economy, making sustained monitoring and a coordinated response from Ukrainian authorities and international partners all the more important.
