Sanctions Bar Russian Paralympians from Receiving Samsung Smartphones

Russian athletes and Samsung: sanctions
Паралімпійці з Росії позбавлені можливості отримувати нові смартфони від Samsung через санкції.

IPC Decision on Sanctions and Sponsor Devices

According to Главком: The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has decided not to provide Russian athletes with sponsor smartphones from Samsung for the upcoming 2026 Winter Paralympics, citing compliance with sanctions legislation. The Games are scheduled to take place in Italy from March 6 to 15, 2026. This legal framework prohibits the transfer of such devices to athletes from specific nations, forming the basis for the denial. This move highlights the tangible impact of international sanctions on major sporting events.

Craig Spence, the IPC's Director of Communications, stated:

"Due to compliance with existing sanctions legislation, it is prohibited to provide devices to athletes from certain countries. However, the IPC will work to ensure all athletes competing at the Winter Paralympic Games have access to essential competition information and athlete-facing Games services, which are typically accessed via the devices." - Craig Spence

Russian athletes will also miss out on the phones at the 2024 Summer Olympics. This marks a departure from past Games, where Russian participants routinely received such gifts from Samsung, a sponsor of the International Olympic Committee which had even created an exclusive smartphone version for the 2026 Winter Games participants. A total of 79 medal events across six sports are planned for the 2026 Winter Paralympics.

Opening Ceremony Boycott Announced

In a related development, the IPC's announcement that Russian and Belarusian representatives will compete under their national flags has prompted a boycott of the opening ceremony by Ukraine and several other European nations. Ukraine's public broadcaster, Suspilne, has confirmed it will not air the opening ceremony of the 2026 Paralympics, though it will broadcast all competitions featuring Ukrainian athletes. A decision regarding the closing ceremony has not yet been made.

The withholding of sponsor smartphones underscores the ongoing consequences of sanctions stemming from geopolitical tensions. This situation reflects broader controversies within the global sports community regarding the participation of Russian athletes. The ceremonial boycott further demonstrates how political issues continue to influence sporting events, potentially affecting international sports diplomacy for the foreseeable future.
