Retired Russian Volleyball Champion Threatens to Kill Wife Ahead of Divorce Hearing
Domestic Violence and Death Threats
According to Главком: On June 23, Russian volleyball player Alexey Spiridonov threatened to murder his wife, stating he would slit her throat. The incident occurred just one day before the couple's scheduled court hearing for divorce. Spiridonov vowed to attend the proceeding and carry out the killing. The athlete, who retired from professional sports a year ago, is a European champion and two-time World League winner. This is not his first brush with the law: in 2011, he received a six-month suspension for alcohol abuse, and in 2017, police detained him for public drunkenness.
Elimination of Russian Occupiers
In a separate development, Ukrainian defense forces have eliminated Russian occupiers with ties to the sports world. Among them is Georgiy Kamalov, a 46-year-old former volleyball player who competed for the Vladivostok-based team Era from 2003 to 2011. After a career-ending injury, Kamalov transitioned into coaching, starting within the Era system. In recent years, he worked with the football club Anri, which he led to compete at the level of the Russian Cup.
- Ukrainian forces also neutralized Chingiz Dodiyev, a Russian occupier born on December 1, 1993, in the village of Baragkhan, Kurumkansky District, Republic of Buryatia.
- Dodiyev held the title of Master of Sports in hand-to-hand combat and was a Candidate for Master of Sports in army hand-to-hand combat and universal karate Ukado/Kempo.
- He also possessed a black belt, 2nd dan, in self-defense.
- Dodiyev gained recognition as a three-time champion of the Russian Cup in universal karate and a two-time champion of the Northwestern Federal District in hand-to-hand combat among law enforcement agencies.
- Additionally, he was a three-time medalist of the Transbaikal Territory in army hand-to-hand combat and a medalist of the Republic of Buryatia in combat sambo.
These events highlight the volatile situation in Russia, where criminal cases and military conflicts continue to have severe societal repercussions. Spiridonov's threats underscore the issue of domestic violence, while the elimination of Dodiyev and Kamalov reflects the ongoing combat operations in the region. Both cases illustrate how accomplished athletes can become entangled in negative headlines due to personal or political circumstances, pointing to broader instability within the country.
