The incident occurred just one day before the couple's scheduled court hearing for divorce. Spiridonov vowed to attend the proceeding and carry out the killing. The athlete, who retired from professional sports a year ago, is a European champion and two-time World League winner. This is not his first brush with the law: in 2011, he received a six-month suspension for alcohol abuse, and in 2017, police detained him for public drunkenness.

Elimination of Russian Occupiers

In a separate development, Ukrainian defense forces have eliminated Russian occupiers with ties to the sports world. Among them is Georgiy Kamalov, a 46-year-old former volleyball player who competed for the Vladivostok-based team Era from 2003 to 2011.
