According to Главком: Estonia's foreign intelligence chief, Kaupo Rosin, has highlighted the difficult decision facing Russian President Vladimir Putin amid mounting battlefield setbacks and the strain of Western sanctions. According to Rosin, Russia is suffering heavy losses, losing more troops than it can mobilize. He also warned that a full-scale mobilization within Russia could destabilize the country internally.

Economic Strain and Military Ambitions

Western economic pressure on Russia-especially financial sector sanctions and oil export restrictions-is dealing a severe blow to its economy.

“They are facing a very tough choice right now. It's hard to predict what decision they will make in this situation. My message is this: let's keep moving forward with sanctions. Now is not the time to hesitate-just keep going,” Rosin stated.

He also noted that Russia’s military ambitions remain vast, and the Kremlin is unlikely to abandon its efforts to subjugate Ukraine as long as Putin remains in power.

Rosin further indicated that the Kremlin will maintain a military presence near Ukraine’s borders even after hostilities cease. According to him, Russia will seek to build up its military forces along NATO’s borders and aim for dominance from the Arctic to the Black Sea. The Kremlin is also likely to continue carrying out sabotage operations within Western nations.

In southern Ukraine, Russian forces have stepped up assault operations, airstrikes, and drone attacks, while Ukrainian defense forces are conducting successful counterattacks.

“All these factors together create a situation where some people in Russia-especially at the highest levels-realize they have a serious problem. It's hard to say what Putin thinks about this, but it seems to me that all these factors are starting to affect his decision-making process,” Rosin concluded.
