The intelligence reported that political opponents in the Russian Federation are being stripped of their citizenship
According to glavcom.ua: The Russian State Duma has passed a law expanding the list of articles in the Criminal Code under which citizenship can be revoked. This list has now increased from 64 to 81. It includes serious crimes as well as formulations that can be interpreted in various ways, such as 'crimes motivated by extremism' or 'justification of terrorism and sabotage activities.'
The formulations leave room for arbitrary interpretation: identical sanctions can be applied to individuals convicted of violent crimes as well as to users who posted an opposition message on social media. Dozens of cases of citizenship deprivation have already been recorded, mostly among those convicted under 'terrorist' and 'extremist' articles, intelligence emphasizes.
Loss of citizenship in Russia means loss of basic rights, complicating a person's life. Stateless individuals do not have access to many state services and opportunities provided by citizenship. This can lead to isolation and loss of social status in society.
The new norms will affect an increasing number of individuals
The new legislative acts in Russia concern not only individuals who have committed serious crimes but also may affect anyone deemed undesirable by the authorities. Even residents of 'new regions' and people who have acquired Russian citizenship by birth can find themselves at risk of losing their status.
The adoption of the law that strengthens the ability to revoke citizenship in Russia creates serious prospects for all citizens. The new norms may pose a threat not only to individuals who have committed crimes but also to those who fall under 'undesirable' government control. Such changes could affect the lives of many people, depriving them not only of citizenship but also of access to social and state services, which could lead to serious social isolation.
