Ukraine to establish 6 defense research centers: what technologies will be developed
The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine has announced the launch of a project to create Research Centers in the defense sector (CoRE: Defence) based on leading universities. This initiative is aimed at developing important military technologies and ensuring adequate pay for scientists.
According to Deputy Minister of Education and Science Denis Kurbatov, a competition for proposals is scheduled for December. The best universities will be selected to establish new centers, which will be funded according to six key areas of research: directed energy systems, space technologies, communication and navigation, autonomous robotic systems, semiconductors, and radar.
In addition, leading universities have already joined the military-technical cluster Brave1, and the Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine, Oksen Lisovyi, has announced a new funding formula for research institutions, which will come into effect in 2026. Thus, institutions that do not pass certification may be reorganized.
'For the first time in Ukraine's history, we systematically and objectively assessed all research institutions funded from the state budget,' emphasized Lisovyi.
