G20 Summit: Europe and Allies Reject American Peace Plan for Ukraine

G20 Summit, rejected peace plan
На зустрічі G20 європейські країни та союзники відмовились підтримати американську ініціативу щодо миру для України.

Rejection of the American Plan at the G20 Summit

At the G20 summit taking place in Johannesburg, leading European countries, Japan, and Canada rejected the American plan for resolving the war in Ukraine. The statement was made after a crisis meeting attended by the leaders of Germany, France, Italy, the United Kingdom, Spain, Finland, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway, as well as representatives of the European Union, Canada, and Japan. The American plan consists of 28 points, several of which have caused disagreement among European allies.

Main Disagreements

The Europeans insist on revising at least four points of the American plan:

  • The first concerns the territorial division, which stipulates the recognition of Donetsk region and Crimea as Russian.
  • The second point concerns reducing the Ukrainian army to 600 thousand military personnel.
  • The third point pertains to security guarantees for Ukraine.
  • The fourth involves the future of frozen Russian assets.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized that the end of the war is only possible with the unconditional agreement of Ukraine.

The American plan was developed by Steve Witkoff and Kirill Dmitriev. Negotiations between representatives of the USA, Ukraine, and European states are scheduled for Sunday in Geneva. Donald Trump has given Ukraine until Thursday to make a decision.

A dilemma was also noted: “Either losing dignity or risking losing a key partner. Either 28 points or an extremely harsh winter - the harshest - and additional risks.”

Thus, the situation remains tense, and further steps by allies may significantly influence the development of the conflict in Ukraine. The rejection of the American plan indicates disagreements among allies regarding approaches to peaceful resolution, which may complicate the search for a common solution. The upcoming negotiations in Geneva may be critically important for determining the future strategy, as their outcomes will affect not only stability in Ukraine but also relations between the USA and European partners.
