Ukraine-Russia Summit in Danger of Collapse: Trump Cools Off, Moscow Poses Ultimatums
Peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia are on the verge of collapse. The planned summit between Putin and Zelensky has effectively been cancelled: Trump has abandoned the idea of negotiations, while Moscow has refused to meet, presenting ultimatums. This is reported by 'Khvylia' citing rfI.
In August, Trump announced a meeting between the Ukrainian and Russian presidents, but a few days later changed his position, comparing their relations to 'oil and vinegar' and promising an 'important' decision within two weeks. Trump did not rule out the possibility of new sanctions against Moscow and complete inaction.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov expressed doubts about the legitimacy of the Ukrainian president and emphasized that Kyiv must abandon its course towards NATO.
The issue of security guarantees has become central in the diplomatic efforts of the United States. Russia, for its part, is not ready for compromises and has refused to meet, reaffirming its position.
It is important to note that Russia violated the 1994 Budapest Memorandum, which guaranteed Ukraine's security. This led to the annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the subsequent invasion in 2022, costing tens of thousands of lives and forcing millions of Ukrainians to leave their homes.
As a result of certain disagreements between Ukraine and Russia, the planned summit between Putin and Zelensky is in question, indicating uncertainty in future relations between the countries.
