Ukrainian Security Service Thwarts Russian Assassination Plot Targeting Key Figures
Operation "Enigma 2.0" Foils Killings
According to Главком: In a joint operation with Ukrainian and Moldovan law enforcement, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has disrupted a series of contract killings planned by a Russian operative cell. Codenamed "Enigma 2.0," the special operation on Ukrainian and Moldovan territory led to the arrest of the group's leader and members, who were preparing to assassinate Ukrainian journalists, public figures, a strategic enterprise director, and military personnel. This operation highlights the persistent threat of Russian-sponsored sabotage and violence against Ukrainian society.
Targets and Arrests
Among the intended targets was Andriy Yusov, Deputy Head of the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War. The SBU detained a 34-year-old Moldovan national with a prior criminal record, who led the hostile cell, along with two of his agents and accomplices from Ukraine, the EU, and the unrecognized Transnistria region. The primary suspect was recruited by Russian intelligence while serving time in a Russian prison and was sent to Moldova after his release to form the agent-combat group.
The agents entered Ukraine posing as tourists, receiving funds for the assassination plots via cryptocurrency wallets and bank cards from foreign financial institutions. To surveil their targets, the suspects posed as couriers for delivery services, documenting locations and objects. Searches yielded firearms, ammunition, combat grenades, and communication devices.
The suspects have been charged under Part 1 of Article 14, Clause 11 of Part 2 of Article 115 (preparation for intentional contract killing) and Part 1 of Article 263 (illegal handling of weapons, ammunition, or explosives) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. They face potential life imprisonment with property confiscation.
Preventing a Terrorist Act and International Cooperation
In a related counterintelligence operation, the SBU prevented a terrorist act in central Kropyvnytskyi, detaining an FSB agent who was plotting an attack on a state official responsible for defense training for the population in the Kirovohrad region. For eliminating their targets, the group developed various methods, including close-range shootings and car bombings. Russian intelligence promised rewards of up to $100,000 per killing, depending on the victim's status.
This operation marks a significant step in Ukraine's fight against Russian aggression and its use of terrorist methods to achieve political objectives.
The arrests underscore the ongoing efforts of Ukrainian law enforcement to ensure public safety and counter threats emanating from Russia. The successful international cooperation with Moldova was crucial in identifying and neutralizing this cross-border threat.
