FSB Agent Apprehended in Khmelnytskyi

According to Главком: Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) has captured a Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) agent in the city of Khmelnytskyi. The operative was attempting to install covert surveillance cameras to monitor Ukrainian military facilities and has been formally notified of suspicion of high treason. In a separate operation in Kyiv, the SBU detained another Russian agent. These arrests highlight the persistent espionage threat Ukraine faces from Russian intelligence services.

SBU counterintelligence successfully disrupted efforts to gather intelligence on western Ukraine's defense infrastructure. The female agent was spying on Ukrainian troop deployment sites, carrying out a mission to install disguised video cameras opposite buildings potentially housing Defense Force personnel. Once activated, the devices were intended to provide remote access to Russian special services, enabling the occupiers to monitor and adjust airstrikes in real-time.

How the Agent Operated

The arrest occurred during the agent's first attempt to install the equipment near a military site. The 60-year-old local resident received her assignment from the FSB via the Telegram messenger app, where a Russian intelligence officer offered her collaboration in exchange for assistance in relocating to the aggressor state. To complete the task, she purchased a video camera online and rented a room in an office center, where she positioned the remote-access video device on a windowsill for the FSB.

During searches, the SBU seized the spy equipment and a smartphone from the detainee. Investigators served her with a notice of suspicion under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which covers treason committed under martial law. The perpetrator is currently in custody and faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.

Separately, the SBU in Kyiv detained another Russian agent, a 40-year-old employee of the information security department of a commercial bank in the capital, who had been recruited by the enemy.

The apprehension of these FSB agents demonstrates the active efforts of Ukrainian special services to counter espionage and protect national security.

The SBU's actions show not only a readiness to respond to threats but also the effectiveness of its counterintelligence work under wartime conditions. These events underscore the critical importance of information security and the protection of defense facilities in Ukraine, which remains a top priority in the fight against external threats.
