Alexandr Plushchenko Switches Allegiance to Azerbaijan

According to Главком: Russian figure skater Alexandr Plushchenko has been granted permission to represent Azerbaijan at international competitions starting from the 2026/27 season. The Azerbaijan Winter Sports Federation confirmed that its request to the International Skating Union was approved, officially allowing the athlete to compete under the country’s flag on the global stage.

The switch to the Azerbaijani national team was authorized by the Figure Skating Federation of Russia back in May 2024. Alexandr is the son of legendary skater Yevgeny Plushchenko, a two-time Olympic champion known for his vocal support of Vladimir Putin and Russia’s war against Ukraine. Currently 13 years old, Alexandr has been training at the Angels of Plushchenko academy since 2017.

Training Camp in Crimea Canceled

Separately, it was announced that a July training camp for Russia’s national skeleton team, scheduled to take place in the annexed city of Alushta in Crimea, has been canceled. Senior coach Denis Alimov stated that the decision to call off the camp was made well in advance, and athletes will instead continue preparing for the season in their home regions under the guidance of their personal coaches.

“I don’t think the cancellation of the camp in Crimea will cause any particular problems,” said Denis Alimov.

This move by Alexandr Plushchenko highlights a broader trend in sports politics, where young athletes seek international career opportunities amid geopolitical tensions. Additionally, the skeleton team’s canceled camp in Crimea may point to logistical hurdles faced by sports organizations under international sanctions and shifting competition schedules. These developments underscore the increasingly complex interplay between athletics and politics in today’s world.

This recent decision by Alexandr Plushchenko to compete for Azerbaijan comes amidst rising tensions in the sports community regarding the participation of Russian athletes in international events. In light of this, Ukrainian sports officials have raised concerns about the implications of allowing Russian athletes back into global competitions, reflecting the ongoing geopolitical struggles affecting the world of sports.
