Son Disowns Singer Povaliy After Her Assets Are Seized
Family Estrangement: Taisiya Povaliy and Her Son
According to Главком: Ukrainian singer Taisiya Povaliy, who has expressed support for Russia's war against Ukraine, has announced a complete break with her only son, Denys Povaliy, citing political differences. In an interview with Russian media, she explained that tensions between them first emerged during the Orange Revolution. Denys studied at the Institute of International Relations at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, where his friends were vocal opponents of the government at the time.
According to Povaliy, serious conflicts at home began in 2014, when her son was studying at the institute and his circle was strongly pro-Orange and anti-authority, while she herself had become a member of parliament. She described heated arguments with her son during that period.
Minimal Contact and Asset Confiscation
Denys Povaliy reportedly moved to Spain with his family, reducing communication with his mother to just one annual birthday greeting via text message. The singer stated she did not ask him to stay because she understood he needed to join his family. They left Kyiv and relocated to Europe, and a ticket was also purchased for Denys. Now, she says, there is no real connection between them-only a single SMS each year on her birthday.
On October 23, Ukraine's High Anti-Corruption Court ordered the confiscation of Povaliy's property and rights to her songs in favor of the state. Her estate in Petropavlivska Borshchahivka has been transferred to the State Property Fund of Ukraine, and after an independent valuation, the assets will be put up for public auction.
Povaliy is under investigation on suspicion of supporting Russia and engaging in collaboration, which has drawn the attention of law enforcement to her activities.
The singer believes her son has fallen victim to propaganda, claiming that all television channels feed him the same narrative-that Russia is bad. She expressed feelings of worthlessness, stating: "I am no longer needed by anyone. It's time for me to go. That's what was in my head. It's terrible."
This case highlights the deep social and familial divisions emerging in Ukraine amid war and political upheaval. Family relationships can face severe strain due to opposing political views, and as Povaliy's story shows, this can lead to total estrangement. Additionally, the confiscation of her assets reflects a broader trend in Ukraine of holding accountable those who support the aggressor, a move that may have significant repercussions for the country's cultural sector.
The recent legal troubles faced by Taisiya Povaliy have led to significant developments regarding her assets. Following the court's decision to confiscate her property, her estate is set to be auctioned to benefit Ukraine's Armed Forces.
