Slovakia's Referendum Initiative

According to Главком: The Slovak opposition party, Democrats, has successfully collected 350,000 signatures to initiate a public referendum. The party launched this petition campaign in late September 2024, gathering support across hundreds of towns and municipalities nationwide. They plan to collect several thousand more signatures as a reserve by the end of February. This move highlights significant public discontent with the current government's direction.

The signed documents will be submitted to President Peter Pellegrini. The proposed referendum seeks three key changes:

  • Terminating the current government's mandate early;
  • Reinstating the Office of the Special Prosecutor and the National Criminal Agency;
  • Abolishing the lifetime pension for Prime Minister Robert Fico.
Democrats' leader, Jaroslav Nagy, stated that '350,000 citizens have sent a clear political signal to the government, which they cannot ignore.'

Under Slovak law, a minimum of 350,000 signatures from eligible voters is required to trigger a public initiative referendum. The Democrats have also announced talks with other opposition forces to mobilize voters, signaling a potential escalation in political activity. Slovakia has experienced political turbulence since the assassination attempt on Prime Minister Fico in May 2024, with deep divisions over his government's reforms.

Rising Political Engagement

This campaign reflects a surge in civic engagement and public dissent against the current administration's policies. The potential outcome of such a referendum could significantly alter the country's political trajectory and reshape its domestic climate. By negotiating with other opposition groups, the Democrats aim to build a unified front against the government, which may lead to new political challenges in the near future.
