Slovak Prime Minister's Stance on the Ukraine War

According to ХВИЛЯ: In a video address on Facebook, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico outlined his position regarding the war in Ukraine and a recent diplomatic initiative from Belgium. Fico commented on a proposal by his Belgian counterpart, Prime Minister Bart De Wever, who suggested that EU member states should grant the European Union a mandate to initiate negotiations with Russia to end the conflict in Ukraine.

In his remarks, Fico noted that De Wever had acknowledged that supporting the war effort has not succeeded in weakening the Russian economy, and therefore negotiations represent the only viable path forward.

"Today, Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever proposed that member states grant the EU a mandate to initiate negotiations with Russia to end the war in Ukraine. He acknowledged that supporting the war has not led to a weakening of the Russian economy, and therefore the only correct path is negotiations," Fico stated.

Support for Peace Talks

Furthermore, Fico expressed his full support for this initiative, stating:

"If the European Union receives a mandate to broker a peace agreement, I would support it with both hands."

These statements underscore Slovakia's desire to seek a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine through diplomatic channels. This development comes as some European leaders face domestic pressure to explore alternatives to a prolonged military stalemate.

The Slovak Prime Minister's declaration signals a shift in the approach of some European politicians towards the war in Ukraine, emphasizing the importance of dialogue. Backing the Belgian proposal may indicate growing pressure on the European Union to intensify diplomatic efforts to resolve a conflict that has now lasted for over a year. Such steps could significantly influence the future policy of EU countries towards Ukraine and Russia.
