Ukraine's Diesel Supply Under Threat as Slovakia and Hungary Halt Exports
Diesel Fuel Exports Suspended
According to Главком: Slovakia and Hungary have both moved to stop the export of diesel fuel to Ukraine. This decision threatens to significantly impact fuel supplies within the country at a time when energy security is of paramount importance. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico confirmed that the company Slovnaft is halting diesel exports to Ukraine, stating that all fuel refined in Slovakia will now be reserved for its domestic market.
Hungary has similarly announced a suspension of diesel deliveries to Ukraine. Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó declared that supplies will not resume until oil begins flowing again through the 'Druzhba' pipeline. This disruption could severely complicate the supply of petroleum products in Ukraine, particularly during a period of rising fuel demand. These suspensions come as Ukraine's energy sector is already under immense strain due to the ongoing conflict.
Negotiations and New Initiatives
Concurrently, on February 18, negotiations involving Ukraine, the United States, and Russia took place in Geneva, lasting approximately an hour and a half. The meeting was attended by Rustem Umerov, Volodymyr Medynskyi, and David Arakhamia. Amidst these developments, Ukraine has imposed sanctions on Alexander Lukashenko. Furthermore, the government has decided to establish an annual Cabinet of Ministers prize for energy sector workers, which will award up to 50 prizes each year, with each prize valued at 200,000 hryvnias.
The Central Election Commission has registered Olesya Otradnova as a People's Deputy of Ukraine. She was recognized as elected in the snap elections of July 21, 2019, and was included on the election list of the 'Servant of the People' party at number 160.
The halt in diesel exports from Slovakia and Hungary is likely to create additional challenges for Ukraine as it strives to meet its energy needs. With domestic fuel demand increasing, the loss of these supplies could negatively affect the country's energy situation, requiring swift and effective decisions from the Ukrainian government to ensure stability in the energy market.
