UN Awaits $4.6 Billion Payment from the United States
According to Главком: The United Nations is seeking clarification from the United States regarding the schedule and amounts for paying its overdue contributions. In a letter dated January 28, UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned member states of the risk of financial collapse due to unpaid dues. The U.S. holds the largest share of this debt, accounting for over 95% of all unpaid contributions to the UN's regular budget. The UN's financial health is crucial for its global operations, which range from humanitarian aid to international diplomacy.
The total U.S. debt to the UN breaks down as follows:
- $2.19 billion for the regular budget,
- $2.4 billion for current and past peacekeeping missions,
- $43.6 million for the work of UN tribunals.
Last week, U.S. Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz promised that an initial payment would be made shortly.
“You will definitely see the first tranche very soon. It will be a significant contribution,” he stated.
Furthermore, UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric reported that the Secretary-General has been discussing this matter with the U.S. Ambassador for some time. The U.S. response to the UN's demands is expected to help the organization avoid further financial strain.
This situation underscores the importance of the UN's financial stability, as unpaid dues impact many aspects of its work, including the deployment of peacekeeping missions and the support of international justice. Settling these debts is critical for ensuring the continuity of UN operations and for upholding international order and security.
