The US is Shifting to Green Burials: What They Are and Why They Are Popular

Trend towards green burials in the US
Зміна в останньому земному спочинку: чому люди звертаються до екологічних поховань?

In the United States, the idea of 'green burials' is becoming increasingly popular – this is when people choose eco-friendly burial methods instead of traditional ones. They use biodegradable materials instead of chemicals and metal structures, which helps reduce the negative impact on the environment. This trend is supported by data from the 'New York Times.'

According to Lee Webster, former president of the Green Burial Council, the number of 'green' cemeteries in the US is rapidly increasing. If there were 150 of them in 2016, there are now 497. Interest in this type of burial is also growing: according to the National Funeral Directors Association, the percentage of Americans interested in 'green' burials has risen from 55.7% in 2021 to 60% in 2023.

This trend is a response to the awareness of the harmful impact of traditional burial methods on the environment: the chemicals used in embalming and the large amount of carbon released during cremation harm nature. 'Green burials' allow for a reduction in carbon footprint and the preservation of the environment.

The popularity of 'green burials' is growing in the US, contributing to the reduction of the negative ecological consequences of traditional funerals and the preservation of nature.
