Washington Asks Kyiv to Ease Fertilizer Sanctions on Belarus
U.S. Urges Ukraine to Relax Belarus Sanctions
According to Главком: The United States has asked Ukraine to coordinate with the European Union on softening sanctions targeting potash fertilizers from Belarus. This push is part of a broader effort to distance Minsk from Moscow, given Belarus's close cooperation with Russia, particularly in the context of the war in Ukraine. Exports of Belarusian potassium carbonate were halted after sanctions were imposed in 2022, following revelations that Minsk had assisted in aggression against Ukraine.
The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump seeks to rebuild ties with Belarus’s self-proclaimed leader, Alexander Lukashenko. Poland and Lithuania could play a pivotal role in transiting these fertilizers. Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys noted that Washington is pressuring Vilnius and other regional countries to lift the sanctions. He emphasized that
“Washington is pressuring Vilnius and other countries in the region through which transit could take place to revoke sanctions on Belarusian fertilizers.”
Potential Sanctions Relief
Beyond this, Washington is considering further easing of sanctions on Belarus if additional political prisoners are released. During a visit to Minsk, U.S. Special Envoy John Coale announced the removal of restrictions on several Belarusian entities, including:
- Belinvestbank
- Development Bank of Belarus
- Belarusian Ministry of Finance
- Belaruskali
- Belarusian Potash Company
“Easing restrictions on Belarus could create some distance between Minsk and Moscow and improve relations with Washington,” sources told Bloomberg.
This U.S. initiative signals Washington’s intent to reshape geopolitical dynamics in the region, aiming to isolate Russia and forge new economic ties with Belarus. If implemented, the sanctions relief could improve Belarus’s economic situation but also raises questions about the moral legitimacy of engaging with Lukashenko’s regime, which has long been criticized for human rights abuses. Additionally, the roles of Lithuania and Poland in this scenario could significantly impact relations within the European Union and NATO.
As the U.S. continues to advocate for a shift in Belarusian sanctions, the potential for easing these restrictions hinges on specific political developments.
