Washington Engages Berlin and Other European Capitals

According to Главком: The United States is currently holding discussions with Germany and additional European nations about co-producing PAC-3 interceptor missiles for Patriot systems as well as AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles. A memorandum of intent is anticipated to be signed during the NATO defense industry forum scheduled in Ankara. This initiative carries significant weight for Ukraine, which is facing a critical shortage of these munitions.

Setting Up Production Lines

A key topic on the table is the establishment of manufacturing facilities for AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles, which are produced by Raytheon. Additionally, plans call for creating a maintenance hub in Europe dedicated to servicing PAC-3 missiles-made by Lockheed Martin-for Patriot batteries. The PAC-3 variant is designed to intercept ballistic threats, while the AIM-120C-8 model is deployed by NASAMS launchers and F-16 fighter jets.

American stockpiles of these weapons have been heavily drained due to the war in Ukraine and ongoing hostilities in the Middle East. The Trump administration is actively exploring new avenues to ramp up arms production, pressing European allies to take a more substantial role in co-manufacturing U.S. weaponry and to boost their own defense spending.

“Globally, fewer of these missiles are produced each month than Ukraine needs to counter Russian ballistic strikes.” – Mykhailo Fedorov, Ukraine’s Minister of Defense

This statement underscores the urgency of the situation and the necessity of negotiating with countries that hold existing inventories of such ammunition to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense capabilities.

Co-producing missiles in Europe could mark a pivotal step in enhancing the defensive posture not only of Ukraine but also of other European nations facing threats from aggressors. Bolstering NATO’s defense capacities through this cooperation may also contribute to regional stability, as increasing the output and availability of modern air defense systems is critically important amid ongoing military conflicts.

As the U.S. and European nations move towards co-producing advanced missile systems, the need for enhanced air defense is more pressing than ever. This initiative aligns with ongoing efforts to bolster Ukraine's defenses against the escalating threats posed by Russian ballistic missiles.
