U.S. Authorities Arrest Iranian Arms Broker for Supplying Sudan's Military
Arrest of Shamim Mafi on Weapons Trafficking Charges
According to Главком: U.S. federal agents have arrested Shamim Mafi, a 44-year-old Iranian national and U.S. permanent resident, on suspicion of orchestrating weapons shipments from Iran to the Sudanese Armed Forces. The arrest took place at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). Mafi is alleged to have acted as a broker for the sale of drones, bombs, detonators, and millions of rounds of ammunition.
Mafi and an accomplice ran an Omani-registered company called Atlas International Business, which received over $7 million in 2025 for executing arms contracts. She is known to have collaborated with Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), with the aim of procuring 55,000 bomb fuses for Sudan's Ministry of Defense. This arrest highlights ongoing U.S. efforts to disrupt Iran's global arms network, which often fuels regional conflicts. The suspect is expected to appear in a Los Angeles court on Monday and faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
Unrelated Tragedies Across the United States
In separate, unrelated incidents, tragic events occurred in the U.S. over the weekend. In Shreveport, Louisiana, eight children aged 1 to 14 were killed and two minors were injured in an incident that took place on Sunday morning across three locations in the Cedar Grove area. In Texas, a 15-year-old student opened fire at Hill Country College Prep near San Antonio, wounding a teacher before taking his own life. The teacher was hospitalized, and the teenager died at the scene. These events underscore persistent national concerns over gun violence and community safety.
The arrest of Shamim Mafi is part of a broader U.S. campaign against Iranian arms suppliers who support conflicts in active war zones like Sudan, where a civil war is now in its fourth year. This case illustrates the challenges of international arms control during protracted conflicts. Meanwhile, the domestic shootings have intensified public and governmental debate over measures needed to strengthen public security and prevent such tragedies.
