The Donetsk region stele may be destroyed: a petition for its rescue registered in the Office of the President
Petition for the relocation and memorialization of the stele in the Donetsk region
According to glavcom.ua: An official petition has been registered on the Cabinet's website regarding the relocation of the stele at the entrance to the Donetsk region and its subsequent memorialization to avoid the threat of destruction. The petition's author, Oksana Andriusiak, emphasizes that the stele with the inscription 'Donetsk region' has become a symbol of resistance and courage for Ukrainian soldiers and civilians since 2014.
«Military personnel, volunteers, and residents left inscriptions on it, making it an important historical artifact of the modern war, preserving the history of both the living and the fallen defenders,» – notes Andriusiak.
The petition states that the stele is under threat of destruction due to shelling by Russian troops and the possible advance of the front. In case of destruction or temporary occupation, an important element of cultural and historical heritage related to the events of the Russo-Ukrainian war will be lost.
Proposals from the petition author:
- Initiate the relocation of the stele to a safe place in the territory controlled by Ukraine (for example, to a rear region or to a museum of modern war).
- Grant the object the status of a monument of national historical and cultural significance.
- Ensure further memorialization of the stele as a symbol of the struggle and resilience of the Ukrainian people.
The petition was published on October 14, 2025. To be considered by the president, 25,000 signatures must be collected within 90 days.
In April 2024, President Volodymyr Zelensky visited the Donetsk region, where he signed the stele, which had been painted by local 'activists' beforehand.
The petition concerns the relocation and memorialization of the stele in the Donetsk region as a symbol of resistance and courage during the Russo-Ukrainian war. The petition author hopes to save this important historical artifact from destruction and support its significance for the Ukrainian people.
