The first monorail transport route was launched on the Eastern Nile line. It connects residential areas of New Cairo with the governmental quarter of the New Administrative Capital.
The first official journey was made by Egypt's Minister of Transport Kamel El-Wazir. He traveled the route from the Investors station in New Cairo to the Government District station.
Monorail transport in Egypt is fully automated
The Ministry of Transport claims that the new trains operate without drivers and are equipped with modern digital systems.
The carriages are equipped with:
- Air conditioning systems.
- Surveillance cameras.
- LCD screens for passengers.
- Special places for people with disabilities.
Passengers can also pay for their ride using cash, bank cards, or electronic wallets.
The monorail line stretches more than 56 kilometers
The total length of the Eastern Nile line is approximately 56.5 km. It connects with the light rail network at the Arts and Culture City station.
The Egyptian government is also building a second monorail line - the Western Nile line. It will be about 42 km long and will connect Cairo with the city of October 6.
In total, the two monorail lines will cover nearly 100 km and 35 stations. The project is being implemented by Egyptian companies Orascom and The Arab Contractors, in conjunction with the French Alstom.
The Ministry of Transport believes that the launch of the monorail will help reduce the use of private cars and make city travel faster and more comfortable.
