Trump's Remarks on Iran's World Cup Role

According to Главком: Former US President Donald Trump has commented on Iran's participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, stating bluntly:

“I couldn't care less. I think Iran is a country that has been severely defeated. They are running out of steam.” - Donald Trump

His comments reflect the long-standing geopolitical tensions between the US and Iran, though they are unlikely to affect the tournament's organization. The 2026 World Cup will be held from June 11 to July 19 across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. In Group G of the tournament, the national teams of Belgium, Egypt, Iran, and New Zealand will compete, with all of Group G's matches taking place in the United States.

Ukraine's World Cup Qualifying Campaign

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian national team has concluded the first stage of the European qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup. Ukraine played its final match of this initial qualifying stage against Iceland, securing a 2:0 victory. The goals in the Ukraine vs. Iceland match were scored by:

  • Zubkov in the 83rd minute
  • Hutsuliak in the 90+3rd minute

Ukraine will face Sweden in the semi-final of the World Cup qualifying playoff on March 26, 2026. A victory over Sweden would see the Ukrainian team advance to the playoff final against the winner of the Poland vs. Albania match. This gives Ukrainian footballers a clear path to continue their fight for a spot in the World Cup.

While Trump's statement about Iran highlights his personal stance toward the nation within the context of international affairs, its relevance to the actual championship is questionable. In contrast, the success of the Ukrainian team in the qualifiers underscores its growing competitiveness on the European stage, potentially boosting its chances for World Cup participation if it can overcome Sweden in the playoff semi-final. The team's progress offers a point of national pride and hope amid challenging circumstances.
