Discovery of a Major Viking Silver Hoard in Finland

This remarkable find consists of thousands of silver coins and various silver artifacts, carefully concealed inside two birch bark containers. The total weight of the coins reaches approximately 4.5 kilograms, nearly double the weight of the previous record-holding hoard found in Nousiainen.

The initial discovery was made by metal detector enthusiast Kalle Lappinen on September 3, 2026. Archaeologist Esko Tikkala examined the site the following day, overseeing the careful extraction of the valuable items. The treasure includes:

• Thousands of silver coins
• A fragment of silver carving
• A silver bracelet
• A silver setting
• A silver bead

The containers were buried about 45 centimeters deep and located roughly 12 meters apart from each other.

Historical Context and Significance

Before this discovery, the largest known Viking silver hoard in Finland was found in Nousiainen in 1895. That hoard weighed around 2.2 kilograms and contained approximately 1,700 coins and other objects. The new find in Syysmya roughly doubles that amount. Among the artifacts, there are Viking-era silver coins including Samanid dirhams dating back to the early 10th century already present in Finnish archaeological collections.

Such discoveries highlight the extensive trading networks of the Vikings. Silver from the Viking era often traveled great distances, with coins found around the Baltic region originating from the Islamic world, Western Europe, and other areas. Recently, Denmark made headlines by unearthing its largest Viking silver hoard weighing 18.5 kilograms-almost triple its previous record. This Danish hoard was found in a private garden near Rebild during terrace groundwork and was stored in a clay vessel dating to around the 10th century. The earlier largest Danish hoard, the Terslev treasure, weighed about 6.5 kilograms.

Archaeologist Tuulia Tuomi remarked, 'The exceptional state of preservation is one of the most unusual aspects of this find.'
