Deserter Opens Fire Near Apartment Building in Kharkiv
Kharkiv Incident
According to Главком: On May 24, a man opened fire near a residential building in Kharkiv’s Industrialnyi District. The suspect, later apprehended, turned out to be a soldier who had gone AWOL from his unit. While no injuries were reported, the individual fired multiple rounds into the air while under the influence of alcohol.
Police arrested the man at the scene and confiscated the weapon, following the procedure outlined in Article 208 of Ukraine’s Criminal Procedure Code. Authorities have launched a criminal investigation under Part 4 of Article 296 of the Ukrainian Criminal Code, which covers hooliganism involving firearms. As stated by the Kharkiv regional police:
“During the investigation, it was determined that the detained individual is a serviceman who had unlawfully abandoned his military unit.”
Similar Cases in Kyiv
Comparable incidents have also occurred in Kyiv. In the Desnyanskyi District, a local resident fired two shots during a confrontation. In the Shevchenkivskyi District, police detained a man who threatened to blow up a building; the suspect was later identified as a soldier who had deserted his post. Meanwhile, in Kyiv’s Obolonskyi District, a brawl escalated into gunfire, with the suspect fleeing in a Peugeot vehicle before being arrested in the Dniprovskyi District.
These cases highlight the growing concern over firearm-related offenses and the urgent need for stricter oversight of military personnel who abandon their units. Given the rising frequency of such events, law enforcement and government agencies must prioritize public safety and military discipline to prevent future violations.
The recent incident in Kharkiv is not an isolated case, as similar gunfire events have been reported in other cities across Ukraine. For instance, in Kyiv, Odesa, and Zaporizhzhia, law enforcement has been actively apprehending suspects involved in firearm-related offenses, raising concerns about public safety and military discipline. These occurrences underscore the pressing need for authorities to address the issue of military personnel abandoning their posts and engaging in violent behavior.
