Kyiv Heating Crisis: 1,200 Apartment Blocks Still Without Heat as Repairs Continue

Building without heating in Kyiv
Негода в столиці України: тисячі квартир залишаються без опалення, поки тривають роботи з відновлення системи.

Restoring Heat to Ukraine's Capital

According to Главком: Repair crews in Kyiv are working to restore central heating following Russian attacks on the energy system. As of January 26, 1,200 multi-story apartment buildings remain without heat. This latest wave of damage comes after strikes on January 24 left nearly 6,000 buildings in the capital without heating. For most of these buildings, this is the third time they have lost heat, following previous attacks on January 9 and 20, after which services were twice restored.

During the night of January 25, heating was reconnected to 100 apartment blocks. Over the past week, more than 340 buildings have had their heat restored. The situation remains highly volatile due to ongoing emergency power outages, which have also left over 800 buildings without electricity. These attacks on civilian infrastructure are part of a wider Russian strategy to target Ukraine's energy grid during winter.

Resilience Centers and Safety Risks

To support residents, 1,300 'Invincibility Points' are operational across the capital as of January 25, providing essential services like warmth, power, and internet. The danger of the repair work was tragically underscored by the death of rescue worker and high-altitude specialist, Oleksandr Pytaiychuk, during recovery operations.

Restoring heat is a critical priority for the comfort and safety of Kyiv's residents during the harsh winter. Despite the relentless efforts of utility services, the situation remains complex, with many buildings still cut off from the heating network. The continued operation of the Resilience Centers is a vital component of the city's response, offering crucial aid to those most in need during this difficult time.
