Alter-Ego Robot Undergoes Testing in Milan

According to НВ — Техно: Standing 1.2 meters tall, the Alter-Ego robot is being trialed at Milan's Maugeri Hospital to assist individuals with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). This initiative stems from a collaboration between the Italian Institute of Technology and the University of Pisa. Testing kicked off in April 2026, with the robot currently operated remotely by a human controller. However, starting in July 2026, Alter-Ego is slated to operate autonomously.

The trial participant, 31-year-old Daniele Senna, is among the first to use this robotic device. Manuel Catalano of the Italian Institute of Technology noted that Alter-Ego could eventually help patients at home, simplifying their daily routines.

Medical Innovations and Cautious Optimism

Dr. Cristian Lunetta, head of the hospital's neuromotor rehabilitation unit, expressed concerns about potential negative patient reactions to the new device. Nevertheless, neurologist Raquel Piras emphasized that delegating tasks like administering pills to the robot was never considered, reflecting a careful approach to integrating technology into medical care.
