Kyiv Gets New Green Areas

According to Главком: In Kyiv’s Pechersk District, a new green space has been created on the site where temporary commercial structures were removed. According to the city’s Department of Territorial Control, around 100 tons of soil were brought in, and 310 square meters of lawn were seeded as part of the improvement project. Trees and shrubs have also been planted in the area, which is expected to boost the local environment.

Legal Hurdles and International Support

Meanwhile, the specialized environmental prosecutor’s office under the Prosecutor General’s Office has filed a lawsuit in an administrative court against the Kyiv City Council and the Kyiv City State Administration. Prosecutors are demanding that the authorities’ failure to grant protected status to the Horbachykha tract-a 32-hectare area on the left bank of the Dnipro River-be declared illegal.

Additionally, tulip season has begun in Kyiv, with flowers blooming from bulbs donated by Dutch companies Smit Flowers and Flower Planet. The gift was facilitated by the Honorary Consulate of Ukraine in the Kingdom of the Netherlands, highlighting a strong example of international cooperation and support for greening initiatives in the capital.

Recent developments in Kyiv reflect the local government’s active efforts to improve the environment and expand green spaces, which are vital for residents’ quality of life.

At the same time, legal challenges related to protecting natural areas-such as the lawsuit over the Horbachykha tract-underscore the need for stricter enforcement of environmental regulations. International support, like the donated bulbs for urban landscaping, also emphasizes the value of global collaboration in tackling ecological issues.

As the city prioritizes the creation of green spaces, legal actions like the ongoing lawsuit against the Kyiv City Council highlight the critical issues surrounding environmental protection in the region. This situation draws attention to the decades-long struggle for the preservation of areas like the Horbachykha tract.
