18 Suspects Detained in Syria as Remnants of Assad's Chemical Weapons Program Unearthed
Discovery of Chemical Program Residues in Syria
According to Главком: Syria’s transitional authorities have uncovered traces of a covert chemical weapons program linked to the regime of Bashar al-Assad. The investigation led to the discovery of raw materials and munitions resembling those used in gas attacks during the country’s civil war from 2011 to 2024. Mohammad Katoub, Syria’s permanent representative to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, confirmed that 18 individuals suspected of involvement in Assad’s chemical weapons program have been arrested.
Detainees and International Cooperation
Among those detained are high-ranking military, political, and technical officials. Syria’s new leadership has begun collaborating with international bodies to investigate the former regime’s chemical activities. A joint investigation by BBC Panorama and BBC Arabic revealed that chemical attacks-denied by the Assad regime-helped the Syrian dictator edge closer to victory in the civil war.
It is worth recalling that Bashar al-Assad was overthrown on December 7, 2024, following a political crisis that escalated into armed conflict. Damascus fell to Sharia-aligned forces after an eight-day assault. Under mounting pressure, Assad fled the country and sought refuge in Russia, where he now lives a secluded life in Moscow.
The discovery of remnants from the chemical weapons program signals ongoing investigations into crimes committed by the Assad regime and could have significant implications for Syria’s future. The new government’s cooperation with international institutions underscores its commitment to a transparent inquiry and may pave the way for justice for victims of chemical attacks. These developments could also reshape Syria’s international relations, particularly with nations that prioritize human rights and adherence to global law.
