Testing of the Kaleidos Reactor

According to НВ — Техно: Fuel for the Kaleidos reactor has been delivered to the United States. The company Radiant has taken possession of this fuel to conduct testing on a 1-megawatt reactor, which is slated to begin full-power operations in the summer. The test will run continuously for 150 hours, during which the reactor will operate at its maximum temperature. Initial product deliveries to customers are scheduled for 2028.

The Kaleidos reactor represents a significant project because it does not require external water cooling, potentially lowering its operational costs. Radiant is the only company authorized to work at the site within Idaho National Laboratory. In February, the U.S. Department of Energy approved the safety framework for this project, providing additional safeguards for its subsequent development phases.

Comments and Impact on the Energy Sector

“We are de-risking a commercial product that will be manufactured and delivered within 18 months. Receiving our custom-fabricated, fresh advanced fuel is a key milestone on the path to that goal.”

Rita Baranwal, Chief Nuclear Officer at Radiant

The Kaleidos reactor could be a major step forward in nuclear energy, as its innovative design reduces cooling expenses. Successful completion of the tests and the start of commercial operations for this project could influence the energy sector both in the United States and globally, opening new avenues for nuclear power with fewer environmental and safety risks.

As the energy landscape evolves, innovative solutions are becoming increasingly crucial. In this context, the ambitious initiative by a U.S. startup to replace coal with underground nuclear reactors is gaining attention. This project, which involves drilling 1.8 km deep, aims to provide a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. To learn more about this groundbreaking approach, click here.
