Kyiv's Darnytsia Heating Plant Damaged in Attack, Threatening Long-Term Disruption

According to ХВИЛЯ: During a large-scale attack by the Russian Federation on the night of February 3, Kyiv's Darnytsia Combined Heat and Power Plant (CHPP) sustained significant damage from a missile strike. This assault poses a serious threat of a prolonged heating outage for residents of the Darnytsia district. The attack specifically targeted the plant's thermal generation section rather than its electrical components, a deliberate tactic aimed at crippling the supply of heating fluid. This incident is part of a broader Russian strategy to target Ukraine's critical energy infrastructure, especially during winter.

Challenges for Kyiv's Left Bank

The situation on Kyiv's left bank, particularly in Darnytsia, remains difficult. The enemy has shifted tactics, concentrating strikes on the district heating system. Maintaining a continuous electricity supply is now critical to prevent the freezing of pipes and infrastructure.

According to Oleksiy Kucherenko, 'electricity, by any means necessary, must be supplied to them off-schedule as additional power,' which would allow for heating roofs and basements where building utilities run, thereby avoiding the freezing of heating fluid and water.

Authorities are currently evaluating options to redirect thermal energy from the Energia plant or other sources. This could help partially resolve the heating problem. In contrast, forecasts for the Troieshchyna district, which receives heat from CHPP-6, are more optimistic, indicating the potential for stable heat supply in that area.

Consequently, the timeline for restoring heating in Darnytsia remains uncertain, and residents may face extended periods of hardship.

The damage to the Darnytsia CHPP and the likely long-term heating disruption underscore the vulnerability of Ukraine's energy infrastructure during the armed conflict. Restoring the heat supply under ongoing shelling will require not only technical solutions but also ensuring the safety of workers performing repairs. Residents of Darnytsia and neighboring districts could encounter severe difficulties, especially amid cold winter conditions, highlighting the urgent need for a swift and effective response to the crisis.
